some thoughts on film

realrealsoft:

Some things that were unclear to me before I came here, but have shown themselves to be quite true in just the two months I’ve worked in the film industry.

a) Making movies is a business. Who would invest money into something without expecting a return? Not a studio. Even though, as William Goldman once famously declared “Nobody knows anything” about moviemaking, they are looking to make a hit, and the best way to avoid producing a bomb is to not stray too far away from what has succeeded in the past, while making room for originality. A hit means they made their money back and then some. Who doesn’t care about making a hit? Indie filmmakers. Studios make blockbusters, but can also grab little indies- movies with scripts not “life affirming” enough or with an appealing enough hook to even get past the initial script readers [look at hustle and flow, etc]. People who are passionate about good scripts and great filmmaking exist. Of course they do! And they tend to be persistent and passionate enough about what they’re doing to get those movies made. Blockbusters still have a place in our culture and world today. And yes, they’re about making money. But great, small films with a message still make their way to the screen, too. I used to be bummed out that movies seemed to only be ‘hits’ based on box office totals, but there is still a lot of respect for something that is critically acclaimed and beloved or a cult hit, that didn’t do so hot at the box office. So, as Ahnold would say: “Stop whining!”

b) Scripts and plots tend to be formulaic. If they don’t follow the Aristotelian/Greek formula of hero/antihero, 3 act structure, climax and conflicts and resolution, audiences as a whole probably won’t be satisfied. Plots wouldn’t be as interesting, characters wouldn’t be as developed, resolutions would be unsatisfying (not like endings always have to be happy - see last sentence) It doesn’t mean its trite, it’s just what works, and in relation to point one, a movie that ‘works’ is a movie that can make money. Story lines can still differ greatly with the familiar structure integral to great story telling. And there are also exceptions to this rule. Memento was great, but twisted. I’d never seen anything like it. It fucked my brain fah dazzze. It was formulaic, but different, and I’m not just talking about relying on “twists”. And different genres, small as they might be (avant garde, film noir) have their place and their fans.

c) If you want your story to be heard and seen by many, you’re gonna have to play by these rules. And wouldn’t you know, playing by these rules means that nobody’s gonna look at, let alone produce a script that won’t make money, and for someone to look at your script, it’s gotta have a great hook, a familiar story arc, and it’s gotta play by some rules. I’m still trying to figure out which can be broken and when.

Basically, when I first came here and read script after script that seemed trite and cliche, I was writing up my coverage and notes on them to pass them up to the producers I work for and realized that I was being critical of a screenplay like I would be of a novel.

And I’ll be honest: since abandoning my semi-elitist attitude towards what made a good story, and realizing that a screenplay is formulaic for a reason, I’ve enjoyed a lot more scripts that come across my desk.

Some of them still suck huge donkey balls, though.

what exactly do you do in The Film Business?

I once took a class called The Film Business, I got a B+

Fuck yes, Matt Groening.

Life in Hell was the cartoon FOX was originally interested in making into live-action for The Tracy Ullman Show. Fearing he would lose all his properties, Groening just threw some throwaway characters. 20-some years later, they’re still on-as the Simpsons.

Mom you never cease to amuse me with how retarded you can be sometimes.

HIP HOP IS RAP YOU IDIOT

Not exactly. Hip-Hop is a genre of music based on four elements: scratching (usually through two turntables and a mixer),  rapping (the delivery of vocals in line with the rhythm in a rhyming fashion with witty observations), breaking (or the misnomer, “breakdancing”), and tagging (better known as graffiti, or graf.). Or as a shirt I saw put it “Rap

Lies-

___________

Hip-Hop” (it’s a math problem)

Actually you can call them the same thing no one cares
