When they showed the shot of a Farmer Whitman arguing with the farm co-operative it looked like it could transposed over the 1885 Potato Eaters painting by Van Gogh.

It’s one of Van Gogh’s most famous early works. His intention was to stay within the Dutch style of documenting peasent life. But instead of a rustic, idyllic scene of apple cheeked farm hands, Van Gogh depicted his toiling workers in an un-sentimentalized, dreary and ugly light (because, you know, most peasents’ lives are none too glamorous as evidenced by the jug swilling Whitmans).

He wrote in a letter about the painting:

I have tried to make it clear how those people, eating their potatoes under the lamplight, have dug the earth with those very hands they put in their dish, and so it speaks of manual labor, and how they have honestly earned their food. I have wanted to give the impression of quite a different way of living than that of us civilized people. Therefore I am not at all anxious for everyone to like it or to admire it at once.

It’s real Salt of the Earth stuff.

Virginia Tech basketball in less than a week.

Starting Five should be

G-Malcolm Delaney : Arguably the team’s best player, strong combo guard. With Hank Thorns transferring to TCU, expect MD23 to play more. Delaney already has INSANE minutes, so I’d be concerned about losing him to fatigue or injury.

G-Dorenzo Hudson : Played well in spots last year, will be interesting to see him in a full-time role.

F-J.T. Thompson: Great when he’s in, and adds a true post position when necessary.

F-Jeff Allen: We have a true center, but I don’t expect him to start. Allen is the most intimidating physical presence for VT, but needs to get back to ‘07-08 levels.

F/C-Viktor Davila: Started last year, and has more maturity. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Davila/Thompson/Witcher rotation a lot.

Overall, VT seems to be focusing on post play this year. Last season was a host to several heartbreakers and a guard-oriented game. AD Vasallo has graduated, meaning that Malcolm Delaney can’t do it himself. Look for local prospect to Cadarian Raines to get some playing time during conference games, as he’s out right now. Tech has a veteran core in the starting five I proposed, with the least experience being Davila, who’s a sophomore. I expect a middle-of-the-pack ACC finish, with too many good teams this year. Also, how the hell is Grievis Vasquez STILL at Maryland? VT might challenge for a tournament bid, but I expect high NIT seed.

He is what I associate with the end of MTV. He was featured on MTV right as the first season of Laguna Beach was ending, and Kristen Cavallari was working on her “career”. I think this video was one of the last “making the video”s.

After that, MTV realized all the bank they could make on a full slate of trashy reality shows. I mean, even TRL is gone now, which was the only thing that connected current MTV to its former glory.

1) MTV has not had full-time musical content since the LATE EIGHTIES

2)AMTV airs from 3-9am, they have videos

3)The Internet has made mtv virtually useless

Tumblr claims to be a lot of things, such as the “easiest way to blog” or some-sort of wasting ground for low-content users. It is both of those things, but I’ve encountered all of this before. Where, you ask?

High School

Specifically, the mid-oughts and their explosion of social networking. First, there was xanga. I liked xanga for its promotion of actual writing and the “blogring” concept, yet it was “emo” as fuck. People would talk about the shitty bands they liked, and generally air out their grievances over the internet. This evolved into MySpace.

MySpace became less about thinking, and more about copying and pasting your dumbass surveys. No one really cared if you liked pepsi or coke, but rather if someone made a hint about liking you. So, this is what Tumblr is-a low-impact, user-generated service that lets people go all LiveJournal with memes.

Seriously, if I see one more thing about shitty power-pop bands, your longing for someone, or your oh-so-advanced adolescent wisdom, I’m gonna be pissed as fuck.
